I was one of several industry CEO’s invited recently to meet with Ontario Minister of Financial Institutions Brian Charlton. Frankly, I came away feeling that the huge gulf which separates this government from the business community is as deep as before. They simply see things from their own prospective. They have talked about consultation with the industry but frankly it just isn’t happening, so it’s impossible to know where we stand and if we will have a meaningful role to play in any new auto scheme.
In the meantime we continue to make our views known to government. IBC has targeted a group of 34 members of NDP government who won very narrow victories. They are being contacted regularly by representatives of the industry’s Political Action Committee, several of whom are from our company. And we played a strong part in the August 15th all-industry rally at Toronto City Hall. The rally’s goal was to show this government clearly that it faces a long and tough battle with us if it persists in its plan for major intervention in our business. We hope to convince them that, working together, our industry and the government can forge an improved product and deliver automobile insurance in Ontario that is second to none.
